Speech and Language Therapy at AVID


Stacie, our speech therapist, teaches sequencing to a young patient.

AVID provides diagnostic and therapeutic services in the following areas:

  delayed speech development

  delayed language development

  hearing impaired

  aphasia

  feeding and swallowing disorders

  dysarthria

  memory skills

  augmentative communications

  learning disabilities

  voice disorders

  stuttering

Your child may benefit from speech therapy if he or she:

a) has difficulty understanding what people say or takes a long time to process what is said

b) has difficulty expressing thoughts and ideas

c) has difficulty eating or swallowing

d) has difficulty saying particular sounds

e) has difficulty expressing thoughts and ideas

   -- substituting one sound for another (dum for gum)

   -- omitting a sound

   -- distorting a sound

f) has difficulty hearing

g) uses a voice that is hoarse, harsh, breathy, nasal, or excessively loud

h) has difficulty with the flow or rhythm of speech (stuttering)

i) is inattentive

j) has difficulty with conversation skills: talks at you instead of with you, has minimal eye contact, or has difficulty reading facial expressions and body language.

Red Flags

Your child should have from birth:

a) 2-3 words by 12 months

b) 8-10 words by 18 months

c) 2 word sentences by 24 months

d) 3-4 word sentences by 36 months

e) be able to converse appropriately with his peers at any age
